Absent Friends Meet at the Harold Pinter Theatre

Absent Friends Alan Ayckbourn’s excruciatingly funny social comedy Absent Friends will be revived at the Harold Pinter Theatre in the New Year with an all-star cast including Reece Shearsmith (The League of Gentlemen, Betty Blue Eyes), Kara Tointon (Pygmalion, EastEnders, Strictly Come Dancing Winner 2010), David Armand (The Armstrong and Miller Show), Elizabeth Berrington (In Bruges, Waterloo Road), Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Season’s Greetings) and Steffan Rhodri (Gavin and Stacey). The show will open on Thursday 9th February, following previews from Thursday 26th January 2012.

A Comedy of Manners and Social Embarrassment

When Colin sadly loses his fiancée, his married friends, Diana and Paul, invite him round for comfort over tea and sandwiches.  As the tea starts to pour, it's clear that there is trouble brewing. Paul has had an affair with Evelyn, the wife of another friend, John, who knows all about it but is dependent on Paul for employment. Diana suspects her husband of having an affair but feels bullied by him. She also misses their children who have been sent away to boarding school. Then there’s Marge who is desperate for a child but has transferred her maternal instincts onto her accident-prone husband, Gordon. Soon the tension begins to boil and Colin isn’t the only one in need of help… with friends like these, who needs enemies?
