Clybourne Park Enters Final Few Weeks

The award-winning satirical play Clybourne Park will end its acclaimed run at the Wyndham’s Theatre next month on Saturday May 07, 2011. The show recently won the Olivier Award for Best New Play, adding to previous gongs including the South Bank Sky Arts Theatre Award and the Evening Standard Award for Best Play.

The Play that Asks is History Repeating?

Clybourne Park transferred to the West End after a successful UK debut at the Royal Court, the leading company behind recent dramatic hits Jerusalem and ENRON. A two-hander set in 1959 and 2009, Clybourne Park examines the historic fault line between race and property within a suburban Chicago neighbourhood. In 1959 a middle-class couple named Bev and Russ decides to sell their home at a knock-down price after a family tragedy. However, when a black couple agree to the valuation and look set to move in, the all-white neighbourhood is split by argument and discontent. 50 years later, the same property is being bought by a young white couple named Lindsey and Steve whose ambitious plans to demolish the house and build a new property are met with a similarly hostile response from the local community.
