West End Theatre Breaks
| Hippy musical Hair will bring back the spirit of the ‘60s when it opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 1st April. A celebration of the golden decade, Hair features an amazing soundtrack, from ‘Aquarius’ to ‘Good Morning Star Shine’. Impresario Cameron Mackintosh is reviving the Tony Award-winning production, which wowed audiences and critics on Broadway last year. Sir Cameron, who worked as a production runner on the original London show, felt the time was right for a West End revival. |

Winning the Censorship BattleHair caused quite a stir when it first opened in London in 1968, just one day after the abolition of theatre censorship. Though mild by today’s standards, the musical caused controversy with it’s scenes of nudity, drug taking and, in particular, its anti-war stance.Others saw it in a positive light, with its message of peace, freedom and self-expression. Hair originally ran for 1,997 performances at the Shaftesbury Theatre, before closing in July 1973. |
Love, Friendship and Very Long Hair…Set in New York in the 1960s, Hair follows the lives of a group of young adults, experimenting, rebelling and living under the shadow of the Vietnam War. Each tribe member tells their story, though Berger (the tribe’s leader) and Claude (the tribe’s conscience) are the two members whose story’s stand out.Claude must decide whether to resist the Vietnam War draft, or go and fight overseas for his country. He looks up to free-spirit Berger, and falls in love with student-activist Sheila. As men burn their draft cards and grow their hair long, Claude struggles to find his place in the social revolution. |
