West End Theatre Breaks
| New musical comedy Lend Me A Tenor, which opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 15 July 2011, has confirmed the final names for its cast. Two-time Olivier Award-winning actress Joanna Riding will star as “Maria Merelli”, the jealous wife of the acclaimed opera singer “Tito Merelli”. Other cast members joining the show are Cassidy Janson (Avenue Q), Gay Soper (former Les Misérables star), Jane Quinn (Grease and The Sound of Music UK tours) and Michelle Bishop (Jersey Boys). The company also includes Matthew Kelly (whose recent West End credits include Sign of the Times and Waiting for Godot), Damian Humbley (The Woman in White and Fiddler on the Roof), Michael Matus (A Christmas Carol) and Sophie-Louise Dann (The Mikado). |

Regional Production Reaches West EndLend Me A Tenor was nominated for Best Regional Production in this year’s Whatsonstage.Com Awards and moves to the West End on the strength of numerous glowing reviews at the Theatre Royal, Plymouth. The musical is an adaptation of an earlier play by Ken Ludwig which was produced in the West End in 1986 (coincidentally at the Gielgud Theatre) and on Broadway in 1989. Lend Me A Tenor the Musical has book and lyrics by Peter Sham, with music by Brad Carroll. It is directed by Ian Talbot, the former Artistic and Managing Director of the Open Air Theatre, Regent’s Park. |

A Night at the Opera Turns into Chaos!Set in 1934, this hilarious show tells the farcical tale of the world’s greatest tenor, Tito Merelli, who has come to Cleveland, Ohio, to save its Grand Opera Company by singing the title role in Otello. When Merelli is unexpectedly incapacitated, Max, the Opera Director’s meek assistant, is given the daunting task of finding a last-minute replacement. Chaos ensues - including a scheming soprano, a tenor-struck ingénue, a jealous wife and the Cleveland Police department. ” A comedy of mistaken identities and unexpected romance, Lend Me A Tenor stars Matthew Kelly as unscrupulous opera manager “Henry Saunders” and Damian Humbley as the mild-mannered director’s assistant “Max”. |
