Lion King Reigns Our Bestselling List

Disney’s The Lion King tops our list of best selling West End theatre breaks over the past three months, based on the number of breaks sold.

The award winning show, with music by Elton John, has been running strong at the Lyceum Theatre near Covent Garden for 10 years in October and its popularity shows no sign of waning.

Bestsellers Summer 2009

Theatre Breaks Top 5 Shows:

1. Disney’s The Lion King

2. WICKED

3. Oliver!

4. The Phantom of the Opera

5. Mamma Mia!

Wizard of Oz prequel WICKED is a close second with only a handful less breaks being sold over the same summer period. It was recently announced that booking has been extended to October 2010. Such is demand for the spellbinding family show that additional half-term and Christmas matinee dates have been released.

Rowan Atkinson’s final months as Fagin were lucrative for Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. The show, which took £15m at the box office before even opening, has now seen Stand-up Comedian and TV star Omid Djalili take over Atkinson’s role. I’d Do Anything winner Jodie Prenger continues to star as Nancy.

The Phantom of the Opera, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most successful musical, may have seen some critics grow weary after 23 years, but with audiences still buoyant the lavish production looks unlikely to give up the ghost anytime soon. With keenly anticipated sequel Love Never Dies due to open in early 2010 the first instalment will continue to be a hot ticket this winter.

At fifth place on our best-selling list, Mamma Mia! continued to bring its feel-good story and the hits of ABBA to a large number of theatregoers. The West End cast will feature in a live event Thank You For The Music: A Celebration Of The Music Of ABBA on 13th September 2009 in London’s Hyde Park. The concert will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 2.
