Record Year for West End Box Offices

The Society of London Theatre has announced that 2009 was a record year for West End box office receipts. Revenues of over half a billion pounds were up 7.6% on 2008. Fuelling the boom were record attendances which passed the 14 million mark. A new record total, of 14.26 million theatregoers, was up 5.5% on the previous year. Set against the background of a UK recession, the size of the increases has surprised many and been a welcome boost to the London economy.

Attendances Remain Buoyant

Attendances for plays showed spectacular growth, with 2009 figures up 26% on 2008. Waiting for Godot, Enron and Jerusalem were just some of the productions enjoying strong sales. Attendances for musicals were down 2%, though by the final quarter of the year were growing again. Many big shows, such as Disney’s The Lion King and Wicked, announced record takings over the festive season.

The Society of London Theatre

The Society of London Theatre was founded in 1908 by Sir Charles Wyndham. The trade association represents theatre owners, managers and producers of the 52 major commercial and grant-aided theatres in central London. Nica Burns, President of the society said:

‘The extraordinary quality and breadth of productions available nightly in London explains these record figures in such a difficult year economically’.

‘Excellence is everything. Look no further than London’s theatre which adds a great deal more to London’s revenue than just the ticket sales’.
