Rock of Ages: Big Screen then West End?

Broadway musical ‘Rock of Ages’ is set to hit the big screen in 2011. Filming is scheduled to begin this summer, after the rights were sold to New Line Cinema, a major American film studio. That may pave the way for a West End transfer, for a show described by some as 'Mamma Mia! for dudes!'

Hair Metal History

Hair Metal was huge in the ‘80s, with bands such as Bon Jovi, Mötley Crüe and Poison combining the power chords of heavy metal, with the flamboyance of glam rock. The bands dominated MTV play-lists, spawning dedicated shows such as Headbanger’s Ball.

From a movement which grew out of the Sunset Strip scene, it was fitting that ‘Rock of Ages’ premiered in Los Angeles in 2006. The musical opened on Broadway in April 2009, and was quickly nominated for 5 Tony Awards.

California Dreaming

Working as a Sunset Strip busboy (a low-paid bar worker), would-be rock star Drew falls for aspiring actress Sherrie. When developers move in, determined to clean up the Strip, their hopes and dreams are thrown into jeopardy.

The set list of classic rock hits includes: ‘We Built This City’, ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘The Final Countdown’; although ‘Rock of Ages’, by British Heavy Metal legends Def Leppard, does not feature in the show.

Is London Calling?

Following the West End success of We Will Rock You and Jersey Boys, ‘Rock of Ages’ producers are believed to be keen on capturing a slice of the London 'jukebox musical' market.

With head-banging rock songs and tongue-in-cheek humour, the show has the potential to reach a whole new audience. Toronto and Melbourne productions are opening soon.

We Will Rock You is the Dominion Theatre’s longest running show, selling over 4 million tickets since opening in 2002. Jersey Boys has won 21 major awards worldwide, including the Lawrence Oliver Award for ‘Best New Musical’.
