Show Profile: Holding the Man

Holding the Man, the brilliant Australian play starring Kath & Kim’s Jane Turner, opened in the West End this week. Based on the autobiographical book by Melbourne-born writer and activist Tim Conigrave, the show tells the story of his remarkable 15 year relationship with football player John Caleo; from meeting at high school and falling in love, to separation, reconciliation and the tragedy of AIDS.

Literary Award for Best Play

Holding the Man has become one of the most successful Australian productions of recent years, breaking box office records and collecting numerous awards, including the New South Wales Premier's Literary Award for Best Play.

Falling in love with the captain of the football team was always going to be taboo for a boy growing up in a 1970s Australian high school. When promising athlete John returns Tim’s advances a funny and tender drama unfolds.

A Best-Selling Memoir

Holding the Man (the title refers to an Australian rules football penalty) won the 1995 United Nations Award for Non-Fiction and has been reprinted many times. Tim Conigrave was desperately ill when he completed the book, dying soon after from an AIDS-related illness; a disease that had sadly already claimed the life of John.

Adapted by playwright Tommy Murphy in 2006, the play is brought to the West End by the original Australian creative team. The cast includes Simon Burke, who starred opposite John Barrowman in La Cage Aux Folles; and Jane Turner - the writer, creator and star of hit TV comedy series Kath & Kim.
Personal and compelling, uplifting yet tragic, Holding the Man is now booking until 03 July 2010. Don’t miss out on the limited chance to see this exceptional show!
