Spice Girls to hit the West End?

The Spice Girls, Melanie B, Melanie C, Victoria Beckham, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell, may be about to launch their own musical after discussing proposals at a recent reunion at a top London restaurant. The musical, based on the group’s rise to fame, aims to cast 5 unknown faces to play the girls on stage.

Talent Show Search

The West End is currently buoyed a string of successful ‘Jukebox Musicals’, whilst television ratings for talent shows like X-Factor remain strong. The musical rumours include a combination of the two formats with a TV talent show to find the 5 singers for the stage show. One or more of the original Spice Girls will sit on the panel to judge the young hopefuls.

Girl Power

At the peak of 90s Girl Power the Spice Girls sold over 60 million records worldwide. Their debut single ‘Wannabe’ went straight to the top of the charts in the UK and 30 other countries, including the United States. The group played their last gig together in early 2008, though talk of a second reunion tour persists.

Mel C makes West End Debut

Meanwhile ‘Sporty Spice’ (Melanie Chisholm) will appear on a West End stage herself at the end of October in the long running Willie Russell musical ‘Blood Brothers’. She takes on the role of harried mother Mrs Johnstone in the popular musical set in her home town of Liverpool.
The story of twin brothers separated at birth, only to be reunited in later life with tragic consequences, has run for a remarkable 21 years at the Phoenix Theatre.
