The Addams Family Comes to Broadway

They're creepy and they're kooky, mysterious and spooky, and now, finally, they’re coming to Broadway! The opening night of the new Addams Family musical is fast approaching, with first previews from 8 March 2010.

Nathan Lane (The Producers) and Bebe Neuwirth (Chicago) will play husband and wife ‘Gomez’ and ‘Morticia’. Two-time Tony Award nominee Kevin Chamberlin (Seussical, Dirty Blonde) appears in the role of ‘Uncle Fester’.

Meet the Family

Created by American cartoonist Charles Addams, the Addamses are a close-knit and eccentric family who delight in the macabre unaware that people find them bizarre or frightening.

Gomez is the head of the household. He is a devoted husband and doting father, with childlike enthusiasm for everything he does. His wife Morticia is a mesmerising woman, clad tightly in black with a ghostly complexion.

They have two children, Wednesday and Pugsley, whose sibling squabbles become deadly games of life and death. Servants and in-laws complete the family portrait,  including elderly Grandmama, bald Uncle Fester and giant butler Lurch.

A Dark Tale

The script by Rick Elice and Marshall Brickma (the writing partnership behind Jersey Boys) is an original idea based on the Addams Family cartoons rather than the better-known films.

The story is set in the present day, with the Addams Family mansion moved to the middle of New York’s Central Park. Like the premise of Meet the Parents Gomez and Morticia throw a dinner party for the mother and father of Wednesday’s new boyfriend. With plenty of gags and typical black humour, this is one love story guaranteed to end in pain!

Crossing the Pond?

Success on Broadway often means a West End transfer, but only time will tell if this scream of a show will travel. Avenue Q, Chicago, Hairspray, Jersey Boys and Wicked have all found homes on this side of the Atlantic.

If the reviews are good and audiences happy you can bet the Addams Family will soon be making the switch!
