Theatrical Phenomenon Rocks On

As the theatrical phenomenon that is We Will Rock You approaches its eighth year at the Dominion Theatre, this audience pleaser shows no sign of stopping. The popularity of We Will Rock You was recently emphasised with the musical’s nomination for ‘Favourite Long Running Show’ in the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards. This week West End Theatre Breaks went along to see the production.

A Legend is Buried

300 years in the future Globalisation is complete. On Planet Mall, formerly known as Earth, the Globalsoft Corporation leaves nothing to chance. Kids are taught to think alike, dress identically and listen to the same computer generated music.

Meanwhile, underneath the cities a resistance is growing. The Bohemians believe there was once a golden age when kids wrote their own music and played fabled instruments. A legend is told of a hidden guitar and a bright star which will guide the way to freedom.

Galileo Uncovers another Star

Australian actor Peter Murphy took over the lead role of ‘Galileo’ last September. He had performed the role previously in the Australian production and Japanese tour. Acting professionally since the age of nine, his accomplished voice and confidence fill the large Dominion stage.

Sabrina Aloueche is excellent as ballsy rebel ‘Scaramouche’. She displays great comic timing and brings tons of energy to the role. Mazz Murray has fun as the tyrannical ‘Killer Queen’ and Garry Lake is terrific as bohemian father figure ‘Pop’, the Seven Seas of Rhye barman who keeps the prophecy alive.

Hot West End Ticket

We Will Rock You opened at the Dominion Theatre in May 2002. The show, a spectacular tribute to the music of Queen, has played over 2,200 performances. On average 600,000 tickets are sold each year. The West End production is now taking bookings to 23 October 2010.
