Tiffany's leads more movies to West End?

Anna Friel
As previously hinted by West End Theatre Breaks, the next production to take the stage at the Theatre Royal Haymarket will be a brand new stage adaptation of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. The play, originally thought to involve director Trevor Nunn will be helmed by the Haymarket’s current artistic director Sean Mathias and will star Brookside and Pushing Daisies actress Anna Friel (left), making her West End debut as the socialite Holly Golightly.

The new play, adapted by Samuel Adamson, will take most of its inspiration from Truman Capote’s 1958 story rather than the iconic 1961 movie and will be set in 1940, although the movie’s Oscar winning standard Moon River will be included. Performances will begin on 29 September and breaks will be available shortly.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s looks like it could be one of a long line of famous movies taking to the London stage. Legally Blonde is of course taking the Savoy in December, and a musical production of Daphne du Maurier’s Rebecca is currently in development. Rebecca was immortalised by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 film, which starred Laurence Olivier as Maxim de Winter. The proposed show is adapted from a hugely successful Viennese production and extensive workshops in London have featured Anna Francolini and Julian Ovenden. ast week the cast performed the piece for a number of theatre owners and producers.

The Daily Mail reported this week that a musical adaptation of the smash hit Bridget Jones’ Diary is also on the cards for early in 2011 with author Helen Fielding actively involved, while London’s theatre fans still talk of an impending transfer of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.
