A Journey to the Western Front

Adapted from Michael Morpurgo’s acclaimed children’s novel, War Horse is a remarkable story inspired by the courageous contribution made by horses during the 1914-1918 war. A young farm hand named Albert is left distraught when his beloved horse, Joey, is sold to the cavalry at the outbreak of war. Although he is underage, Albert enlists in the British army and sets out on a journey to the chaotic battlefields of the Western Front to bring Joey home.

A New Film by Steven Spielberg

War Horse was adapted for stage by Nick Stafford and is directed by Marianne Elliott and Tom Morris. The highlight of the show is possibly the incredible puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to life on the stage. A Broadway production of War Horse opened at Lincoln Center Theater, New York in March 2011 and went on to collect five prestigious Tony Awards. A film adaptation by Steven Spielberg (starring Benedict Cumberbatch and David Thewlis) is due for release by the Dreamworks Studios at the end of the year.
