Whoopi Describes 'Special' First Night in Sister Act

Whoopi Goldberg today described her Sister Act debut as 'truly special' after completing her first performance at the London Palladium.

Watched by a packed house, including Sir Ben Kingsley and photographer Mario Testino, the actress received a standing ovation at the end of the show, and was later mobbed by fans as she left the theatre - the Evening Standard reporting that it took the star more than half an hour to reach her car!

Fans Queue For Tickets

Goldberg famously played the part of singer Deloris Van Cartier in the 1992 film, whilst Maggie Smith appeared as Mother Superior. She spoke last week about the challenges she faces with the role:

“The most intriguing part is how not to imitate Sheila or Maggie. But I'm a different age and a different colour. There may be a little foolishness in my Mother Superior but I'm not going to steal the stage. That's the other thing to keep in my head — that I'm not Deloris.”

With many fans queuing overnight for tickets, it's a shame she's only going to be here for 3 weeks!
