Wicked Defies the Downturn

Smash hit musical Wicked enjoyed another successful year in 2009, despite the downturn in the economy. The show enjoyed its highest grossing year to date, taking £27.3 million at the box office (up nearly £100,000 on 2008). The production was recently named ‘Musical of the Decade’ by Entertainment Weekly magazine and continues to be nominated for awards, including ‘Best West End Show’ by theatregoers voting online.

The Magic of Oz

Based on the novel by Gregory Maguire, Wicked takes to take the audience’s existing knowledge of ‘The Wizard of Oz’ then twists it with endless surprises. The Wicked Witch of the West has another side to her story and Wicked shows the world of Oz in a whole new light. Winner of over 30 international awards, productions worldwide have grossed over £1 billion.

Four Years of Success

Wicked entered its fourth year in September 2009. It celebrated its 1,000 London performance in February and welcomed its 2 millionth patron in May. An outstanding achievement recognised by UK Producer Michael McCabe: ‘The public's incredible enthusiasm and support for Wicked has swept us along on a huge wave of success since we opened in 2006. We are enormously grateful to the millions of people who have bought tickets to date and especially to those who made 2009 our best year yet’.
Wicked proudly supports Magic 105.4's ‘Cash for Kids’ charity and the Anti-Bullying Alliance.
