Wizard of Oz Movie Prequel Gathers Momentum

A big-screen prequel to The Wizard of Oz is moving closer to production in Hollywood. Casting rumours for the film have gathered pace in recent weeks, with Mila Kunis (Black Swan, Forgetting Sarah Marshall) reportedly in line to play the role of the Wicked Witch of the West. The Disney-backed venture is titled Oz: The Great and Powerful, and tells the story of the young Wizard of Oz from his time as a young illusionist who escapes from a travelling circus, only to be caught in a tornado and swept up into the land of Oz. The film also explores the origins of both the Wicked Witch of the West and the Wicked Witch of the East, as well as Glinda the Good Witch of the North.
Johnny Depp IMDb Filming of Oz: The Great and Powerful is due to begin in June 2011, although Robert Downey Jr (who was up for the role of the Wizard) has pulled out of the project. Johnny Depp and James Franco are two names that have been linked with the part. Depp had seemed a certainty for the role, but time commitments may now end up ruling out one of the busiest men in show-business. Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has taken charge, and full casting will no doubt be confirmed in due course.

The Wizard of Oz Opens at the London Palladium

New West End musical The Wizard of Oz opened at the London Palladium on March 01, 2011 with a cast led by Over the Rainbow winner Danielle Hope in the role of Dorothy. The Andrew Lloyd Webber and Bill Kenwright production features new songs to compliment the already famous score by EY Harburg and Harold Arlen, that includes such classics as Over the Rainbow and We’re Off to See the Wizard.

The critics have certainly been impressed by the lavish production values and energy of the show.  The Times noting: “Hope is charming: sweetly naive and sincere. When she first soars into ‘Over the Rainbow’ without a tremor, applause stops the action … The tornado gets applause too — no mechanical or projection device is spared as the farmhouse whirls through outer space to land in the primary-coloured toytown of Oz, with a pair of dead witch’s legs under it… Crawford brings vulnerability and humour. I warmed to it at last, despite a helpless sense that it’s a juggernaut. A predetermined hit.”
