New musical Sister Act is of course based on Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992 movie classic. Whoopi starred as Deloris Van Cartier, a club singer who finds herself on the wrong side of the mob and takes on the guise of a nun, Sister Mary Clarence, so she can find safety in a convent. As Whoopi herself has summed up the plot, “Good girl sees bad thing, goes to nuns.”

Since it was first staged in California in 2006, Sister Act has undergone a number of changes with drastic rewrites including new scenes and characters being cut altogether. The action has been moved from 1990’s Reno and San Francisco to 1970’s Philadelphia, giving much of Glenn Slater and Alan Menken’s score an authentic disco flavour, as well as the rousing gospel that made the movie such a hit. Also, the characters from the film remain the same, which will surely come as a huge relief to millions of Sister Act fans.

The brand new London production boasts an impressive cast including Sheila Hancock, Ian Lavender, Katie Rowley Jones and West End newcomer Patina Miller as Deloris. The production ischoreographed by Anthony Van Laast, the dance maestro behind Mamma Mia!, Michael Crawford’s Las Vegas spectacular EFX and the cult Sex Pistols movie The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle.
