Death and the Maiden

Death and the Maiden, written by Chilean playwright Ariel Dorfman, was first seen in London at the Royal Court Theatre in 1991. The psychological thriller tells the story of a former political prisoner named Paulina who was raped by her captors, including a sadistic doctor who she never saw but only heard speak. Years later, Paulinas husband is brought home by a stranger after his car breaks down on the road. The man, calling himself Dr Miranda, possesses a very familiar voice, and Paulina is determined to extract a confession from the mysterious outsider. Thandie Newton stars in this new revival at The Harold Pinter Theatre.

A Dark Thriller at the Comedy Theatre

Thandie Newton plays a former prisoner in Ariel Dorfman’s dark thriller at the Comedy Theatre. Newton is ‘Paulina’, a former political detainee who was raped by her captors. One evening, her husband’s car has a puncture on the road and he is helped home by a stranger named Dr Miranda, a man with a strikingly familiar voice and manner.  Determined to extract a confession, Paulina takes the unassuming doctor prisoner forcing her husband to take action to save a potentially innocent man’s life. The title of the show comes from the music which Paulina’s captor played: Schubert’s Death and the Maiden Quartet.
