A modern version of the French classic, the action is set in present-day London. Alceste (Lewis), the protagonist and misanthrope of the title, is a washed-up playwright, bitter at the hypocrisy of the world. His plans to reject society are thrown into confusion when he meets beautiful actress Jennifer (Knightley), an ambitious film star, who is the darling of the city’s social scene.
Directed by Thea Sharrock, the director behind the London revival of Equus, the play will see Keira Knightley make her West End debut.
