Hair

James Rado and Gerome Ragni s 1967 tribal rock musical Hair centres on a group of long-haired hippies who champion peace, love and freedom against the backdrop of the Vietnam war draft during the 1960s.

Galt MacDermot s score features the famous songs Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine, Let The Sunshine In and, of course, Hair.

Hair premiered off-Broadway in 1967 before transferring to the Great White Way the following year where it was a huge success, capturing the spirit of the anti-war movement and winning the 1969 Tony Award for Best Musical. The show opened in London in 1968 - the first musical to open after the abolition of the censor - with a cast including Elaine Paige, Richard O Brien, Tim Curry and Paul Nicholas. It ran until 1973, only coming to an end because the roof of the Shaftesbury theatre fell in.

This new production of Hair, by the Public Theater, opened on Broadway in March this year and won the 2009 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. In transferring with th

Hair

The revival of the 1967 rock musical is back in the West End. Written by James Rado and Gerome Ragni’s and set to the score by Galt MacDermot’s and features well known songs Aquarius, Good Morning Starshine and Let The Sunshine In. Hair centres on a group of hippies who promote peace, love and freedom against the backdrop of the Vietnam War during the 60s.

Claude, his good friend Berger, their roommate Sheila and their friends struggle to uphold their strong morals in trying times they find themselves in. Ultimately, Claude must decide whether to resist the draft as his friends have done, or to compromise his principles and risk his life by serving in Vietnam.

Flower Power Returns to London

Hippy musical Hair will bring back the spirit of the ‘60s when it opens at the Gielgud Theatre on 1st April. A celebration of the golden decade, Hair features an amazing soundtrack, from ‘Aquarius’ to ‘Good Morning Star Shine’.

Impresario Cameron Mackintosh is reviving the Tony Award-winning production, which wowed audiences and critics on Broadway last year. Sir Cameron, who worked as a production runner on the original London show, felt the time was right for a West End revival.

Winning the Censorship Battle

Hair caused quite a stir when it first opened in London in 1968, just one day after the abolition of theatre censorship. Though mild by today’s standards, the musical caused controversy with it’s scenes of nudity, drug taking and, in particular, its anti-war stance.

Others saw it in a positive light, with its message of peace, freedom and self-expression. Hair originally ran for 1,997 performances at the Shaftesbury Theatre, before closing in July 1973.

Love, Friendship and Very Long Hair…

Set in New York in the 1960s, Hair follows the lives of a group of young adults, experimenting, rebelling and living under the shadow of the Vietnam War. Each tribe member tells their story, though Berger (the tribe’s leader) and Claude (the tribe’s conscience) are the two members whose story’s stand out.

Claude must decide whether to resist the Vietnam War draft, or go and fight overseas for his country. He looks up to free-spirit Berger, and falls in love with student-activist Sheila. As men burn their draft cards and grow their hair long, Claude struggles to find his place in the social revolution.
