Based on the hit movieof the same name, Legally Blonde the Musical is the Broadway sensation created by a top-of-their-class creative team, led by Tony Award-winning director and Olivier nominated choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray).
Legally Blonde the Musical willtake you from the social whirl of California Campus life to Harvard's Halls of Justice with the West End's brightest new heroine (and of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser).
The verdict? This much fun shouldn' be legal!
When it opened in New York in September 2007, the musical adaptation of Legally Blonde was an instant hit. The show is, of course, based on the hit 2001 movie that starred Reese Witherspoon as pampered rich girl Elle Woods. The story of Elle’s quest to be taken seriously while taking law at Harvard immediately caught on with America’s teenagers when it took to the stage, and the show’s lead actress Laura Bell Bundy was nominated for a Tony award. When Bundy left the show in July 2008, and Legally Blonde’s immense popularity justified an MTV talent search to find a replacement. The winner, Bailey Hanks, had only been in the role for three months when the show fell foul of the recession, posting its notices only two weeks before its closure in October.
Prior to its closure, there had been talk of a London transfer. However, plans were shelved when the Broadway show closed, despite its still being one of America’s most popular shows. Now, the UK success of Broadway’s Spring Awakening and the popularity of a newly launched US touring production of Legally Blonde have given the green light to a West End production, and performances will now begin at the Savoy Theatre on 5 December 2009. Legally Blonde stars Sheridan Smith as Elle alongside Alex Gaumond and former Blue singer Duncan James.
Latecomers may not be admitted to a performance, and if admitted, may not be seated in the seats that have been originally allocated
TV presenter and West End star Denise Van Outen will return to the London stage next month, joining Sheridan Smith and the cast of Legally Blonde the Musical at the Savoy Theatre. Former Hollyoaks actress Carley Stenson and talent show star Siobhan Dillon will also join the show this autumn. |

Van Outen, who recently gave birth to her first child, Betsy, with actor husband Lee Mead, replaces Jill Halfpenny in the role of ‘Paulette’. Recent TV work has seen Van Outen running the rule over future West End stars in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s shows ‘I’d Do Anything’ and ‘Any Dream Will Do’. Her stage credits include the role of ‘Roxie Hart’ in the sizzling musical Chicago. Siobhan Dillon reached the final of TV talent show ‘How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?’ Although she lost out on the role, it wasn’t long before she made her West End debut as ‘Patty’ in the ever-popular Grease at the Piccadilly Theatre. She returned to the show again this year, taking the leading role of ‘Sandy’. Carley Stenson will make her West End stage debut in Legally Blonde the Musical. She is best known for the role of ‘Steph Cunningham’ in C4’s Hollyoaks, a role she has played for over ten years. |

Sheridan Smith Can't Resist a 'Chihuahua-Filled' Christmas! Sheridan Smith, who leads the cast, has extended her commitment to the show and will now continue in the musical until 09 January 2011. Speaking about her decision to remain in the show, the star said: "I absolutely love playing Elle Woods, it's been one of the highlights of my career so far, and I'm thrilled that the audiences love the show as much as I do. When Sonia (Sonia Friedman the show’s producer) asked me to stay for a little bit longer, I couldn't resist the thought of a pink, Chihuahua-filled Christmas!" |
