The largest production of Oliver! ever staged has landed at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. Lionel Bart’s classic, first staged in London in 1960, stars Griff Rhys Jones as Fagin. Appearing alongside them are the stars of BBC television’s I’d Do Anything, Jodie Prenger as Nancy with Gwion Wyn Jones, Zac Hurst and Francesco Piancentini-Smith alternating the title role.

An expansion of Sam Mendes’ iconic London Palladium production in the early 1990’s, Oliver! features a cast of 35 adults, a 22 piece orchestra and three alternating companies of 50 children. The breathtaking and ambitious set uses every inch of the Drury Lane’s expansive stage, and features some spectacular choreography by world renowned dancer and choreographer Matthew Bourne.

Oliver! features all your favourite classics as immortalised by the 1968 movie, including Food Glorious Food, Oom Pah Pah, You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket or Two, As Long as He Needs Me and Consider Yourself, as well as a few fantastic songs you will only hear on the stage such as the hilarious I Shall Scream, That’s Your Funeral, and Bill Sykes’ menacing My Name.

On Wednesday evening performances, the role of Nancy will be played by Tamsin Carroll.

All cast appearances are subject to illness, emergency and holiday.

Omid Djalili to replace Atkinson in July

Producers of Oliver! At the Theatre Royal Drury Lane have announced that comedian Omid Djalili will play the role of Fagin when Rowan Atkinson leaves the show in July.
He has become one of the biggest and most names in modern British comedy, with his distinctive hyperactive performance style, singing and uncanny knack for imitating accents. He got his big break at 1995’s Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where his stand-up act ‘Short, Fat Kebab Shop Owner’s Son’ became the first in a long line of his sell-out Fringe shows. His success has led to numerous television appearances including Have I Got News For You, Room 101, Live at the Apollo and his own BBC series The Omid Djalili Show.
As well as his success as a comic, Djalili is a trained actor with a degree in Theatre Studies and has appeared in numerous films, most notably Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, Gladiator, The Mummy, Casanova and Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. He gained a following in America after appearing as janitor Nasim in the Whoopi Goldberg sitcom Whoopi, and was the second British comedian after Eddie Izzard to be given his own HBO special. Oliver! will see Djalili make his West End debut.
Omid Djalili  will be playing Fagin in Cameron Mackintosh’s sensational Oliver! at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane from Monday 20 July 2009. Oliver! is now booking until September and you can book your break here.
