Matt Lucas plays Kenneth Halliwell alongside Chris New as playwright Joe Orton and Gwen Taylor as Mrs Corden, in Daniel Kramer s production of PRICK UP YOURS EARS, a new play by Simon Bent inspired exclusively by the John Lahr biography and the diaries of Joe Orton.

Simon Brent’s brand new play makes its world premiere at the Comedy Theatre and stars Little Britain writer and performer Matt Lucas.
Lucas stars as Kenneth Halliwell, lover of legendary playwright Joe Orton. The couple shared a private, creative and disruptive life together, playing pranks on strangers and defacing books in their local library. When Orton began to rise in literary circles with plays such as Entertaining Mr Sloane, Loot and What the Butler Saw, Halliwell sank into a depression. While Orton was out drinking and flirting with artists and performers, his lover was reduced to discussing this success over tea with a neighbour.
Based on John Lahr’s celebrated biography of Joe Orton and on Orton’s own private diaries, Prick Up Your Ears takes a look inside the relationship between Orton and Halliwell. The play examines what went on behind closed doors, and the spiral into destruction that resulted in Halliwell murdering Orton in 1967.
Starring alongside Matt Lucas are Chris New as Joe Orton and Gwen Taylor as neighbour Mrs Corden.

Lucas Leaves Play
 | Star Matt Lucas has sadly had to leave the play Prick Up Your Ears and will not appear in any future performances. Con O’Neill is to replace Lucas in the role of Kenneth Halliwell from the 22nd October, understudy Michael Chadwick will play the role until then. O’Neill has won numerous awards including the prestigious Olivier award. O’Neill will be joined by Chris New and Gwen Taylor. Prick up your ears looks at the private lives of playwright Joe Orton and his lover Kenneth Halliwell, and the events that led Halliwell to murder Orton in 1967. |
