Shrek the Musical Opens at Drury Lane

Shrek the Musical The West End’s latest blockbuster, Shrek the Musical, opened at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane on Tuesday night. A host of celebrities attended the green carpet event (yes, they really had one!) as the show defied a nearby fire at a building on the Strand which caused traffic diversions and the cancellation of the evening performance of Dirty Dancing at the Aldwych Theatre.

Based on William Steig’s book Shrek! and the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animation film of the same title, Shrek the Musical is the hilarious story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who must rescue a princess from a fearsome dragon in order to appease a short-tempered ruler and reclaim the deed to his land. Nigel Lindsay stars as the loveable ogre Shrek, Amanda Holden plays feisty Princess Fiona, Richard Blackwood is the talkative donkey and Nigel Harman gets down on his knees as despicable Lord Farquaad.

Paul Taylor for the Independent

“Shrek the Musical is a glorious tease, fielding tap-dancing Pied Piper rats and prisoners hand-jiving through wooden stocks. It's genuinely moving, too, in the way it resolves, because love prompts Princess Fiona to accept her ugly ogre side rather than through the usual transformation of plainness into dazzling good looks.”

Charles Spencer for the Telegraph

“The show’s use of fairy story characters, who pitch up as squatters in Shrek’s swamp, is deliciously funny, and Tim Hatley’s lurid designs are often spectacular, not least the huge and amorous purple dragon that flies not only around the stage but over the heads of the audience.”

Quentin Letts for the Daily Mail

“Big thumbs-up immediately for Nigel Lindsay as Shrek. His accent is a bit wobbly – he doesn’t seem to know if he is Scottish or from Yorkshire – but he makes Shrek thoroughly amiable. All this with two green trumpets for ears, a vast belly and a flatulence problem the equal of any Maharajah of Vindaloo.”
