New musical Sister Act is of course based on Whoopi Goldberg’s 1992 movie classic. Whoopi starred as Deloris Van Cartier, a club singer who finds herself on the wrong side of the mob and takes on the guise of a nun, Sister Mary Clarence, so she can find safety in a convent. As Whoopi herself has summed up the plot, “Good girl sees bad thing, goes to nuns.”

Since it was first staged in California in 2006, Sister Act has undergone a number of changes with drastic rewrites including new scenes and characters being cut altogether. The action has been moved from 1990’s Reno and San Francisco to 1970’s Philadelphia, giving much of Glenn Slater and Alan Menken’s score an authentic disco flavour, as well as the rousing gospel that made the movie such a hit. Also, the characters from the film remain the same, which will surely come as a huge relief to millions of Sister Act fans.

The brand new London production boasts an impressive cast including Sheila Hancock, Ian Lavender, Katie Rowley Jones and West End newcomer Patina Miller as Deloris. The production ischoreographed by Anthony Van Laast, the dance maestro behind Mamma Mia!, Michael Crawford’s Las Vegas spectacular EFX and the cult Sex Pistols movie The Great Rock’n’Roll Swindle.

Sister Act praised!

Patina Miller
Sister Act went down a storm at its opening night last night. Even the harshest critics could not resist the show’s disco beats and tireless energy, as Sister Act got the fastest ovation West End Theatre Breaks has ever seen on an opening night.

Most critics enthused about Sister Act, and the Telegraph and the Evening Standard happily gave the show four stars. A few were more difficult to impress, with the Guardian’s Michael Billington grumpily giving two stars. The critics were unanimous in praising the cast. The cast includes Dad’s Army and Eastenders actor Ian Lavender and British stage and screen institution Sheila Hancock, both of whom were praised by the press.
But it is the unknown Patina Miller as Deloris who has drawn the most acclaim. The American actress makes only her second professional stage appearance in Sister Act, and it has made her a star overnight. Her powerful voice and flawless comic timing led the critics to dub her ‘so amazing’, ‘terrific’, ‘a star’ and ‘worth the admission price alone’.

Sister Act the musical is drastically different from the film, yet the changes have also been applauded. The songs contained in the 1992 film are absent, but are not missed when Alan Menken’s brand new score kicks in. Menken is widely known for his workl on Disney films such as Aladdin and The Little Mermaid, and his music for Sister Act is no less catchy and energetic. As the action has been moved from the 1990’s to the 1970’s the entire score has a funky disco feel that never fails to get the audience on its feet.

The hilarious and spectacular Sister Act is currently booking at the Palladium until February next year, and you can book your break here.
