Wicked Wins Audience Award

Wicked has been voted the West End’s favourite long-running show at the 2010 Laurence Olivier Awards, just months after being named Best Stage Musical of the Decade by Entertainment Weekly magazine. Competition was fierce in the brand new category, which was voted on by theatregoers themselves, with over 58,000 votes being cast. Four other shows made the final shortlist: Billy Elliot, Phantom of the Opera, War Horse and We Will Rock You.

Another Triumph for a Magical Show Wicked has won an incredible 35 international honours and grossed over £95 million at the UK box office since opening in September 2006. The latest award was presented to the musical’s Executive Producer Michael McCabe, together with new leading ladies Rachel Tucker and Louise Dearman, who join the show at the end of this month. Rachel (above), who joins as Elphaba, has recently finished playing Meat in the Queen inspired musical We Will Rock You. She was a semi-finalist in the BBC talent search ‘I’d Do Anything’. Louise (above), who joins as Glinda, recently played Eva Peron in the popular UK tour of Evita. She has appeared previously in the West End in Guys and Dolls.

But Who is the Worst Witch? Based on the novel ‘The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West’ by Gregory Maguire, Wicked is the spellbinding prequel to the ‘Wizard of Oz’.  Two sorcery students form an unlikely friendship, the blonde and popular Glinda and the green and misunderstood Elphaba. After meeting the Wonderful Wizard their lives take on very different paths, becoming the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch of the West, with extraordinary adventures along the way.
